The first 'Friends' gathering was held in Puddletown Church in February 2010 when plans for the conservation of the Martyn family monuments in the Athelhampton Chantry were afoot. The work was to include the re-positioning of the major alabaster figure into the middle of the space, and considerable work to the structure of the building. Whilst conservation of monuments is not usually the business of this trust, a grant was given to assist with the cost of fabric repairs in the Chapel, without which the conservation could not be sensibly carried out. The lecture with slides will be presented by Brian and Moira Gittos FSA, nationally renowned antiquaries, who have made a study of these (and many other) military effigies of the period. The history of the monuments will be explored, as shown by details in the carving - particularly of the alabaster effigies. A long coffee break mid-morning will allow a leg-stretch, and an opportunity to enter the Chapel and view the finished conservation and re-ordering and repair work. The
lecture is open to everyone. Tickets are £10.00 each. Mrs
