MILTON ABBEY
The Crossing

On entering the church and looking 60 feet up under the great tower, the superbly executed fan vaulting is revealed in all its glory. It was built by Abbot Middleton in about 1490. At the intersections of the ribs are bosses carved with the arms of King Athelstan, Cerne Abbey, Milton Abbey, Coker and Morton (benefactors of the Grammar School) and Latimer. In the centre is a round wooden bell-trap.
