The North Aisle

Most major medieval churches had a low stone bench facing inwards from the outer walls.  The nave was not equipped with any seating for the congregation, who were obliged to stand throughout the service.  However, the stone bench could be used by those who needed it, hence the expression "the weak go to the wall".
