The Mary Tregonwell Tomb

                  The Sir John Tregonwell Tomb

At the eastern end of the north aisle are two tombs.  The most impressive one in marble, against the east wall, is in memory of Mary Tregonwell who died of smallpox in 1704 after the birth of her second son.  She had inherited the estate in 1680.  In contrast, the grey stone monument on the right side is in memory of Sir John Tregonwell who bought the Abbey in 1540 and died in 1565.  The brass plates, once coloured, show him kneeling in prayer with a Latin quotation from St Paul "We however should glory in the Cross of Our Lord".
