‘Ride + Stride’ for Dorset ’s Historic Churches and your own parish

2013 is the 23rd year of the ‘Great Cycle Ride’ organised by the Dorset Historic Churches Trust. Since 1991 the event has raised over £800,000 to assist churches and chapels of all denominations in Dorset with grants and loans for essential fabric repairs and restoration. Last year the Cycle Ride raised £60,000, half of which was, as usual, returned immediately to participating parishes. This year you can donate directly by clicking 'The Just Giving' button immediately below this. If you wish half your donation to be given to a specific church, please put the name and place of the church in brackets behind your name: for example Adam Smith (St. John Broadwindsor).

All ages can take part, by bicycle, on foot, in a wheelchair or on horseback.  The majority of churches will be open between 10.00 am and 6.00 pm to welcome cyclists and validate their sponsorship form. Many of the churches will offer refreshments and local information.

Sponsorship is based on the number of churches the participants plan to visit, the distance, area and timing of individual rides is entirely up to those taking part and can be as long or as short as desired. It is ideal for families, groups and individuals who can take part by bicycle, on foot, in a wheelchair or on horse back. Those unable to take part in the ride can help out by staffing their local church, so there really is a part for the local community to play.

Many parishes take time to plan a route for their cyclists and we are hoping to tap into that source of information for others to take advantage of. If you would like to offer your route for others, we now have a pro-forma which can be completed. This will then be available to download from the website. There is a certain amount of information which we need for each route, for example: approximate distance, number of churches, type of roads and so on. The form is available from the website, or you can request one from Anna Butler either in hard copy or via e-mail.
